MERCEDES FAULT CODE GUIDE

Mercedes P06DA00 Code Meaning and Tests Before Repair

P06DA00 means the engine control unit has detected an electrical fault or open circuit in the actuation circuit for the engine oil-pump control valve. On the Mercedes bulletins discussed here, that valve is identified as Y130. The code does not prove that the complete oil pump has failed.

By Mercedes Specialist

11 minute read

Mercedes P06DA00 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for an electrical problem in the oil-pump valve control circuit. It does not, by itself, establish low oil pressure or a mechanically failed pump. Mercedes-Benz service information for relevant M270 and M274 applications tells technicians to confirm the vehicle and model year, check whether the fault is current or stored, note whether the check engine light is active, and then run the guided Y130 circuit test when required.

THE PRACTICAL ANSWER

Do not authorize an oil pump, control valve or major strip-down from the code alone. Ask for the engine identification, full scan result, current-versus-stored status and the measurements that locate the open circuit or high resistance.

What P06DA00 means

The fault text used in Mercedes-Benz technical information is: “The actuation of the valve of the oil pump in the combustion engine has an electrical fault or open circuit.” In the relevant bulletins, the Motor Electronics control unit monitors the circuit to component Y130, the oil-pump control valve.

An open circuit means the electrical path is interrupted. High resistance means current cannot flow through that path as expected. Either condition can be caused by more than one point in the circuit, so the code describes what the control unit has detected rather than naming the part that must be replaced.

Entity Role in this fault What it does not prove
P06DA00 Reports an electrical fault or open circuit in oil-pump valve actuation. It does not prove that the complete oil pump is mechanically damaged.
Y130 Mercedes designation for the engine oil-pump control valve in the applicable bulletin. A code naming its circuit does not prove the valve itself is the only possible cause.
ME control unit Motor Electronics detects and stores the circuit fault. It does not make every stored event an active failure at the time of inspection.
CEL or MIL The check engine light shows when the fault meets the activation conditions. Its absence does not mean the code cannot be present in stored fault memory.

P06DA and P06DA00

A generic scanner may display P06DA as “engine oil pressure control circuit/open.” Mercedes-capable equipment can show the fuller P06DA00 fault text, status and associated control-unit information. The extra “00” does not turn the scan result into a parts diagnosis. The guided test and electrical measurements still matter.

How urgent is P06DA00?

The dashboard message and the rest of the scan determine the urgency. Mercedes-Benz states that, for model-year 2019 and later vehicles covered by the M270/M274 passenger-car bulletin, P06DA00 will activate the check engine light and no drivability concerns are expected from this fault alone. That is not the same as saying every oil-system warning can be ignored.

If the vehicle only has an amber check engine light, drives normally and has no instruction to stop, arrange diagnosis rather than guessing at a repair. If the dashboard tells you to stop and switch off the engine, or there is abnormal mechanical noise, treat that instruction as the priority. A red oil-pressure warning, a low oil level and P06DA00 are separate pieces of information that require the correct checks.

Amber CEL only
Record when it appeared, avoid clearing useful data and arrange a Mercedes-capable scan.
Red stop instruction
Follow the dashboard instruction. Do not keep driving merely because P06DA00 can sometimes exist without drivability symptoms.
Noise or rough running
Do not attribute it automatically to P06DA00. Check the full fault memory and assess the separate symptom.
No warning light
A stored code may still be visible during a scan. Its meaning depends on model year, engine and guided-test result.

Current and stored are different

A current fault is being detected during the test or under the present operating conditions. A stored fault records an event that occurred earlier and may be intermittent or no longer active. A technician should preserve the scan record before clearing anything because status, accompanying codes and available event data help determine what to test next.

The useful scan record includes more than the code number: status, control unit, related faults and the conditions in which the event was recorded all guide the diagnosis.

The model-year branch matters

Mercedes bulletin LI07.70-P-070763 gives two different paths for covered M270 and M274 passenger cars. Up to model year 2018, P06DA00 may be disregarded when it is not activating the check engine light, unless the guided test says otherwise. If it activates the light, the bulletin directs the technician to update the ME control-unit software and check whether the code still activates the check engine light after two drive cycles.

For model year 2019 and later vehicles covered by that bulletin, the code activates the check engine light. Mercedes identifies high resistance or an open circuit to Y130 and directs the technician to perform the guided test, locate the electrical fault and repair it as necessary.

A 2025 bulletin for vehicles 447 and 907 with the M274 engine uses the same current-versus-stored and model-year distinction, but its exact remedy must be followed for those applications. This is why the VIN, engine and applicable bulletin should be confirmed before applying advice from a different Mercedes model.

Which Mercedes can be affected?

The most reliable answer is based on engine and vehicle identification, not on a long internet list of model badges. The November 2023 Mercedes passenger-car bulletin applies to vehicles with M270 or M274 engines. The February 2025 bulletin applies to 447 and 907 vehicles with the M274 engine.

Those bulletins do not establish that every Mercedes carrying a familiar badge has the same engine, wiring layout, software or repair access. A C-Class, GLC, CLA, GLA, E-Class, Vito or another model can have different powertrains across years and markets. The registration card and model name are not enough; the VIN and engine designation should be checked.

UAE VEHICLE CHECK

Imported vehicles can differ by original market, engine and software. Provide the VIN, model year, engine details and a complete scan report before comparing your car with an overseas repair example.

Compare the two bulletin scopes before approving software

The engine designation is important, but it does not make two service documents interchangeable. The passenger-car and 447/907 bulletins discussed here both concern M274 applications, yet the remedy wording is not identical. Ask which document and version the technician is applying to the actual vehicle.

Document Stated application Important limitation
LI07.70-P-070763 version 3 dated November 17, 2023 Passenger cars with M270 or M274 engines. Its up-to-model-year-2018 CEL branch includes ME software and a two-drive-cycle warning-light check.
LI07.70-N-078824 dated February 11, 2025 447 and 907 vehicles with the M274 engine. Do not import the passenger-car software instruction into this document; follow its own stated remedy and applicable guided tests.

Both are technical service information, not proof that a particular car has a defective pump or qualifies for a free repair. An overseas publication also does not establish UAE warranty or campaign eligibility. Confirm those commercial and campaign questions through the appropriate VIN-specific channel.

If the engine falls outside the stated scope, the code still deserves interpretation, but this article’s model-year branches cannot simply be copied over. The workshop needs the technical information for that engine. Similar scanner wording is not evidence of an identical connector, circuit or replacement assembly.

What can cause the code?

The official bulletin identifies the condition to find: high resistance or an open circuit in the Y130 circuit. The technician then has to locate where that condition exists. Depending on the exact vehicle, the investigation may include the connector and terminals, the wiring path, the electrical side of the control valve, the supply or control side of the circuit, and the ME control-unit software specified by the applicable bulletin.

The circuit has several test points

Each point must be evaluated against the wiring diagram and guided test for the exact VIN.

Connector and terminals
Loose contact, terminal damage, contamination or a poor connection can interrupt the path.
Wiring harness
An open conductor or excessive resistance can exist between the control unit and Y130.
Y130 electrical circuit
The valve’s electrical side must be tested rather than condemned because its name appears in the fault text.
ME software and control
The applicable pre-2019 passenger-car bulletin includes a software path when the code activates the CEL.

What should not be assumed?

An overdue oil change, incorrect oil level or mechanical oil-pressure problem deserves attention when present, but P06DA00 is specifically an electrical-circuit fault. An oil and filter change is not a substitute for locating an open circuit. Likewise, clearing the code does not repair a broken wire, poor terminal contact or failed electrical component.

Tests before replacing parts

The following sequence explains the purpose of the Mercedes guided process without turning the guide into a DIY wiring procedure. Circuit limits, connector pins and access methods must come from the technical information for the exact VIN.

  1. Confirm the VIN, engine and model year
Identify whether the car has an M270, M274 or another engine and select the technical information that actually applies.
  2. Save the complete quick-test result
Record P06DA00 as current or stored, the CEL status, the ME control unit and every accompanying fault before anything is cleared.
  3. Check the driver’s complaint
Separate an amber CEL with normal driving from a red stop message, abnormal noise, oil-level problem or unrelated drivability concern.
  4. Run the guided Y130 test
Use Mercedes-capable diagnostic equipment to follow the component test under the ME list of tests and observe the specified result.
  5. Inspect and measure the circuit
Check relevant connectors, terminals and wiring for an open or excessive resistance using the correct diagram and test limits.
  6. Apply the software branch where specified
For an applicable vehicle up to model year 2018 with the CEL activated, follow the bulletin’s ME software instruction before escalating the repair.
  7. Repair only the confirmed cause
The correct work may be a connection or wiring repair, software action or component repair. Test evidence decides which one.
  8. Clear, cycle and re-scan
Complete the specified verification, verify the applicable circuit and warning-light outcome, and investigate any new oil-system or electrical faults.

What the repair decision should show

A useful estimate should connect the recommended work to a test result. “P06DA00 present” is not enough. The report should explain whether the open or high resistance was located in a connector, wiring section or the valve circuit, whether the specified ME software path applies, and how the result was verified.

Finding Repair direction Verification
Poor connection or damaged terminal Repair the confirmed connection fault to the required standard. Repeat the circuit test and guided test, then re-scan.
Open or high resistance in wiring Repair or replace the affected wiring section as appropriate. Confirm continuity and resistance meet the specified limits.
Y130 fails the guided electrical test Repair the component or related assembly specified for that engine. Run the applicable guided checks and verify the original electrical fault has been resolved.
Applicable pre-2019 CEL software case Follow the Mercedes ME software remedy before unnecessary parts replacement. Check the bulletin’s two-drive-cycle condition and re-scan.
Stored pre-2019 code with no CEL Follow the guided test; the bulletin says it may be disregarded if no other instruction applies. Document the status and any monitoring advice.

Why estimates vary

Diagnostic time, access to the confirmed fault, connector or harness repair, component access, seals and fluids, software work and final verification can all change the estimate. Ask for those items separately. A large mechanical estimate should be supported by more than a scan-code printout.

Ask for a diagnostic result you can act on

A useful report does not need to overwhelm an owner with wiring diagrams. It should show the connection between the finding and the proposed work. Ask for the initial fault status, the applicable test path and a plain-language explanation of where the electrical problem was located.

For example, a hypothetical report might identify an interrupted connection in a specific wiring section and recommend repairing that section. That supports a different approval from a report showing that the valve circuit fails the prescribed test. Neither conclusion should be replaced with the generic phrase “oil pump code.”

  • Before testing: record the VIN-linked engine, warning-light status, complete fault list and whether P06DA00 is current or stored.
  • After testing: explain the relevant result, the location of the fault and any test limitations or unresolved intermittent behavior.
  • Before repair: list the confirmed work, access labor, necessary fitting materials and verification included in the estimate.
  • At handover: distinguish a repaired circuit, an applicable software outcome and a stored event that requires no additional repair under the correct branch.

If access work is proposed before the fault can be localized, ask what the first authorization covers and what decision will follow the inspection. Agree on a further approval point. Dismantling can be necessary in some cases, but the code itself is not a complete justification for an unlimited repair scope.

A second opinion is most useful when it receives the original report and proposed estimate. Repeatedly clearing the code before each visit can remove useful context. Let the next technician assess the recorded evidence rather than starting with only a photograph of the code number.

Define a successful result before collecting the car

Success depends on the branch being followed. A repaired electrical defect should satisfy the relevant circuit and guided checks. For the applicable older passenger-car software branch, the cited bulletin’s two-drive-cycle decision concerns whether the code still activates the check engine light. That is more specific than demanding that every historical entry disappear.

Clearing memory and seeing no warning immediately afterward is not, by itself, proof that an intermittent fault has been resolved. Ask what verification was completed and whether the original conditions could be assessed safely. The technician should explain any remaining uncertainty rather than promising that a brief scan predicts future reliability.

If the same amber warning returns, preserve the new scan information and report when it happened. A returning warning can require comparison with the earlier result; it does not automatically mean the same component must be replaced again. If a red stop message or abnormal mechanical noise appears, follow that urgent instruction and arrange assistance.

Ordinary maintenance remains useful, but no special oil additive, routine code clearing or automatic valve replacement is established here as prevention for P06DA00. Follow the correct maintenance requirements and investigate actual findings. An electrical-circuit diagnosis and an oil-service decision answer different questions.

The practical takeaway: identify the applicable bulletin, preserve the warning and scan evidence, locate the fault before selecting parts, and agree how the result will be verified. The correct outcome may be a smaller electrical repair, an applicable software action or no additional repair under a narrowly defined stored-code branch.

Common P06DA00 questions

Does P06DA00 mean the Mercedes oil pump is bad?

No. It means the control unit detected an electrical fault or open circuit in the oil-pump valve actuation circuit. The connector, wiring, valve circuit and applicable software path must be checked before deciding what has failed.

Can I drive with Mercedes code P06DA00?

Follow the dashboard message first. The relevant Mercedes bulletin says model-year 2019 and later vehicles may show only the CEL with no drivability concern from this fault alone. If the car displays a red stop instruction, has abnormal engine noise or another serious symptom, switch off as instructed and arrange assistance.

Can an oil change clear P06DA00?

An oil change does not repair an electrical open circuit or high-resistance connection. Oil level, condition and service history can be checked separately, but the P06DA00 circuit still needs the appropriate diagnostic path.

What is the difference between current and stored P06DA00?

Current means the control unit is detecting the fault now or during the present test conditions. Stored means the event was recorded earlier and may be intermittent or inactive. Model year, CEL status and the guided-test result determine what happens next.

Can a stored P06DA00 code be ignored?

For covered M270 and M274 passenger cars up to model year 2018, Mercedes says P06DA00 may be disregarded when it does not activate the check engine light, unless the guided test specifies otherwise. Do not apply that instruction to a different engine or vehicle without confirming the correct bulletin.

Which engines are named in the Mercedes bulletins?

The 2023 passenger-car bulletin names M270 and M274 engines. The 2025 bulletin names 447 and 907 vehicles with the M274 engine. Other engines require their own vehicle-specific technical information.

Will clearing the code fix the problem?

No. Clearing removes the stored record. It does not repair a wiring, terminal, valve-circuit or software problem. Preserve the scan details first, complete the required test and verify the circuit and warning-light outcome required by the applicable repair or bulletin branch.
